You Haunt My House

When you’re gone, the house never 
truly settles. The door is unlocked,
the shoes aren’t put away; the microwave 
always has three seconds left,
perpetually waiting, blinking. 
Your poltergeist leaves breadcrumbs
in the butter and the bathroom light
switched on in the day, and pokes 
just in the small of my back
when I walk up the stairs -
it floats about the house
like an eerie ice dancer, skating
through the dust. So when
all my socks are paired and
the bin has a liner in, I search
and search for ghosts and ghouls
in the kitchen, under the bed,
rifling through my wardrobe
for any cold trace of you that
might be left, still. Don't go,
I call out, you can't go yet; 
kick the ice cubes under the fridge
one last time
